The superscription to Psalm 3 tells us that it comes from the days of 2 Samuel 15-19 when king David was usurped by his son Absalom. Heavily outnumbered (v1-2), David remains confidence that God is his shield who will keep him safe (v3-4). As a result, he is able to rest securely at night (cf. 2 Samuel 17:1, 16). Finally, David prays for rescue and an end to his enemies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The life and experience of David foreshadow those of Jesus Christ (cf. Luke 24:44). The world conspired against him (Mark 3:6) and thought that he had no one to rescue (Matthew 27:42-43). Nevertheless, he trusted his Father to care for him and know what is best, ultimately vindicated with bodily resurrection from the dead. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We sing this song as those who share in the blessings which God gives to his King. Though we are also subject to pressure, the Spirit helps us to be confident of God’s providential care and to rest in his sovereignty whilst we wait for the day when all enemies are destroyed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
