A prophetic voice speaks to the people of God telling them a parable, a truth that requires thought and reflection to uncover and understand. It is told so that each successive generation might learn to put their trust in God (v7). The Psalm itself focuses on God’s dealings with his people of old, covering the period from slavery in Egypt, on to plagues, Passover and rescue, the wilderness wanderings, the initial time in the Promised Land and the destruction of Israel by the Assyrians. Thereafter there is a brief reflection on God’s choice of David and his line to rule from Zion. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The aim of the Psalm is to draw us to a place of penitence for our folly (we have also sinned as did our ancestors) and trust in God’s sovereign grace. We are deserving of judgement because of our unfaithfulness and sin and we must not persevere in these ways. Instead, we must trust in the King from Zion who brings deliverance from sin and its consequences, and learn to live in the light of his work. The New Testament identifies Jesus as the prophetic voice in this Psalm (Matthew 13:35), the true manna from heaven (John 6:31) and the true rock from which life giving water flows (1 Corinthians 10:3-5). <\/p>\n\n\n\n
