This psalm begins with the king’s deep suffering and ends with the people’s gladness because the king is rescued. The plight of the king is desperate (v1-3) and undeserved (v4-5). He is hated and opposed not because of a crime and injustice that he has done, but because he is consumed with a zeal for God and his glory (v7-12). Nevertheless, there is a confidence that God will act to rescue his king (v13-18), a confidence which leads the king to submit to further suffering (v19-21) with the certain hope that justice will ultimately be done (v22-29). In light of this certainty, the king looks forward to a day of thanksgiving when salvation comes and his faith in God is vindicated (v30-36). A day of rejoicing for all God’s people since their fortunes are tied with the fortunes of God’s king (v6, 32).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The New Testament makes numerous references to this Psalm in relation to Jesus Christ: 69:4 is quoted by Jesus (John 15:25); 69:9a is quoted of Jesus in John 2:17; 69:9b is quoted of Jesus in Romans 15:3; 69:12 is echoed and fulfilled in Matthew 27:27-30; 69:21 is echoed at the cross (Matthew 27:34, 38). <\/p>\n\n\n\n
In terms of enemies and those opposed to Jesus: 69:22-23 are quoted with reference to hardened Israel (Romans 11:9, 10); 69:24 is echoed in Revelation 16:1; 69:25 is quoted by Peter with reference to Judas Iscariot (Acts 1:20).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
