Psalm 65 is a song of joyful thanks to God for his forgiveness of sins (65:1-3), the privilege of life in his presence (65:4), the glory of his works in creation and history (65:5-8) and the generous provision which he gives to all people (65:9-13; cf. Matthew 5:45). Noticeably in the first verse we are told that the LORD is to be praised in silence. There are some historical sources outside of the Bible which assert that the Jerusalem priests were silent when they performed their duties at the temple. Yes, there were songs of praise sung by the people \u2013 but it was also a place of silence. Silence that recognises the majesty of God. Silence that acknowledges his greatness. Silence which confirms that what he has to say to us is is most important. Humility before our Creator. Silence is thus an appropriate response for the worshipper who comes into God\u2019s presence. The LORD must speak first before we respond with vows \u2013 our ears must be ready to hear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
