Psalm 56 vividly expresses the strenuous contest between faith and fear that is found in the heart of the king and the kings\u2019 people. Pursued by Saul, David has fled to the Philistine city of Gath (see 1 Samuel 21:10-15). Conscious of his desperate situation, he cries to God for help as he finds both \u2018fear\u2019 and \u2018confidence\u2019 within his heart at the same time. Hated and hunted, we are not surprised that there is fear, it is a human response. Yet, the Spirit is also present, teaching God\u2019s King to be unafraid in the midst of fear, knowing that the LORD will care for him and humble those who oppose him. Now is a time of hardship and sorrow, but there will come a time of thanksgiving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As we sing this Psalm, we cry out in our fear even as we take comfort in God\u2019s promise to his King and the fact that we benefit from the work of God\u2019s King Jesus. We know what it is to be afraid and not afraid while confident of life eternal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
