Psalm 53 is very similar to Psalm 14. Noticeable differences are the substitution of ‘God’ for ‘LORD’ in (cf. 53:2,4,6 and 14:2,4,7) as well as Psalm 53:5 compared with Psalm 14:5b-6. Specifically, it appears as if Psalm 14 focuses more on God\u2019s deliverance of the righteous, while Psalm 53 focuses more on God\u2019s defeat of the wicked. Why exactly the same Psalm has been included twice in the Psalter (with minor changes) is not clear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In terms of its literary context, Psalm 53 fits well amongst other psalms from the time when David was a fugitive fleeing from Saul. In terms of the relation to Jesus Christ, he is the King who rules but not yet is he acknowledged by all. It is very appropriate to lament the troubles which his people experience from a godless world, and to long for the day when all wicked will be done away with, the day when Christ returns in glory. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
