Psalm 39 begins from a place of frustration. Committed to obedience, the Psalmist has not experienced earthly riches and blessing. \u201cWhy follow the LORD when doing so does not bring any visible benefit (riches)?\u201d Wicked words spoken in his presence, he initially keeps silence before voicing his prayer to God. He asks the LORD to give him a fresh appreciation for the brevity of life, specifically to remind him that chasing after riches is a pointless vanity. Conscious of his sin, he also prays for forgiveness even as he recognises that the hardships of life are exactly what we deserve for our transgressions. Finally, he looks forward to the resurrection and prays that the days which remain for him might be ones in which he finds some enjoyment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
How does Jesus lead us in singing this song? He shows us by his Spirit what we should long for during our lives on earth. Our hope must not be fixed in riches but in resurrection. Suffering will be our lot until the day of his return and though we may ask our Father to spare us from trouble, we should not expect to have lives that are free from pain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
